꿈을 꾸기에 늦은 나이는 없습니다!
꿈을 꾸기에 늦은 나이는 없습니다. 사랑처럼 꿈은 나이를 초월합니다. 꿈은 우리를 영원한 청춘이 되게 만듭니다. 꿈은 우리를 젊게 만드는 강력한 능력입니다. 하나님은 성령님을 우리에게 부어 주심으로 꿈꾸게 하십니다. 젊은이들은 환상을 보고 어른들은 꿈을 꾸게 하십니다. 꿈꾸시는 하나님을 만나면 나이를 초월하는 삶을 살게 됩니다. 꿈은 나이를 초월하게 만드는 강력한 능력입니다.
어린이만 꿈꾸는 것이 아닙니다. 청년들만 꿈꾸는 것이 아닙니다. 어른들도 꿈을 꿉니다. 아무리 청년이라도 꿈을 꾸지 않는다면 그는 더 이상 청년이 아닙니다. 그는 젊은 노인에 불과합니다. 반면에 아무리 노인이라도 꿈을 꾼다면 그분은 노인이 아닙니다. 나이가 든 푸른 청춘이십니다. 하나님은 75세의 아브라함에게 꿈을 심어주셨습니다. 그의 나이가 100세가 되었을 때, 하나님은 다시 그를 찾아오셔서 좌절된 꿈을 회복시켜 주셨습니다. 하나님은 모세가 80세가 되었을 때 그를 찾아오셔서 이스라엘 민족을 애굽 바로 왕의 손에서 건져내는 꿈을 심어주셨습니다. 모세는 80세에 하나님의 부르심을 받아 120세까지 쓰임을 받았습니다.
가끔 우리는 꿈이 좌절되는 것 같은 경험을 할 때가 있습니다. 낙심하지 마십시오. 수많은 사람들이 꿈이 좌절되는 것 같은 경험을 하며 살아갑니다. 하지만 좌절된 꿈은 하나님을 만날 때 회복됩니다. 우리는 어려운 환경을 만날 때, 날개가 부러지는 것 같은 느낌을 갖습니다. 하지만 하나님은 꿈을 다시 꾸게 하심으로 부러진 날개를 치유해 주십니다. 연약해진 날개에 힘을 불어 넣어주십니다. 어려운 환경을 초월해서 비상할 수 있는 능력을 부어주십니다.
하나님은 우리를 비상할 수 있는 존재로 만드셨습니다. 꿈은 비상할 수 있는 날개와 같습니다. 높은 곳을 향해 비상할 때 비전을 갖게 됩니다. 높은 곳에 올라가면 멀리 보게 됩니다. 높이 오를수록 멀리 볼 수 있습니다. 전체를 볼 수 있습니다. 꿈은 비상하는 능력입니다. 땅만 바라보며 살지 마십시오. 눈을 들어 위엣 것을 바라보십시오. 하늘을 바라보십시오. 높은 곳을 바라보십시오.
꿈은 미래지향적입니다. 꿈은 앞을 내다보게 만들어 줍니다. 꿈은 소망을 갖게 만듭니다. 우리 인간은 소망하는 존재입니다. 하나님은 소망의 하나님이시며, 소망을 주시는 분이십니다. “소망의 하나님이 모든 기쁨과 평강을 믿음 안에서 너희에게 충만하게 하사 성령의 능력으로 소망이 넘치게 하시기를 원하노라”(롬 15:13). 소망을 갖고 있는 한 모든 어려움을 극복해 냅니다. 어떤 장애물도 극복해 냅니다.
꿈꾸는 사람에게 가장 중요한 것은 절박한 마음입니다. 꿈을 성취해야만 한다는 절박한 마음, 꿈을 성취하고야 말겠다는 절박한 마음이 아주 중요합니다. 하나님은 절박한 기도, 애절한 기도, 목숨을 내건 기도를 통해 역사하십니다. 한나의 기도는 절박한 기도였습니다. 에스더의 기도는 목숨을 내건 기도였습니다. 우리를 절박하게 만드는 것은 위기입니다. 고통입니다. 그런데 그 위기와 고통이 우리를 더욱 놀라운 세계로 이끌어줍니다.
제게 영감을 주는 화가 가운데 애나 메리 로버트슨 모지스라는 분이 계십니다. 이분은 모지스 할머니로 더 알려져 있습니다. 76세에 그림을 그리기 시작해 80세에 개인전을 열고 100세에 세계적인 화가가 된 분입니다. 그녀는 미술을 체계적으로 배운 적이 없었습니다. 시골 농장에서 아이를 키우며 살던 평범한 여인이었습니다. 그녀가 76세가 되던 해, 평소 앓던 류머티즘 관절염으로 인해 도무지 실을 자수바늘 구멍에 맞게 끼울 수가 없었습니다. 그때 바늘을 내려놓고 대신 붓을 들어 그림을 그리기 시작했습니다. 그녀의 말에 귀를 기울여보십시오.
“사람들은 내게 이미 늦었다고 말하곤 했어요. 하지만 지금이 가장 고마워해야 할 시간이라고 생각해요. 무엇인가를 진정으로 꿈꾸는 사람에겐 바로 지금 이 순간이 가장 젊은 때이거든요. 시작하기에 딱 좋은 때 말이에요” (애나 메리 로버트슨 모지스, 『인생에서 늦은 때란 없습니다』. 수오서재, 256쪽)
인생에서 늦은 때란 없다는 말을 기억하십시오. 모지스 할머니는 76세부터 101세의 나이로 세상을 떠나기 직전까지 왕성하게 그림을 그렸습니다. 무려 1,600여 점의 작품을 남겼습니다. 새해를 맞이해서 새로운 꿈을 꾸십시오. 하고 싶었던 일을 천천히 시작하십시오. 절박함이 초조함은 아닙니다. 절박함은 간절함이요, 뜨거운 열정을 의미합니다. 뜨거운 열정으로 꿈을 성취하기 위해 도전하십시오. 하나님은 꿈꾸는 자에게 미소를 보내십니다.

There is No Age Too Late to Dream!
There is no age too late to dream dreams. Like love, dreams are beyond age. Dreams make us youthful forever. Dreams have the powerful ability to make us young. God makes us dream by pouring the Holy Spirit upon us. He gives young people visions, and gives adults dreams to dream. When we meet the God who dreams, we can live a life beyond our age. Dreams have a powerful ability that transcends age.
Children are not the only ones who dream. Youth are not the only ones who dream. Adults also dream dreams. No matter how young he is, he is no longer a youth if he doesn’t dream. He is only a young old man. On the other hand, no matter how old he is, he is not an old man if he dreams. He is an aged evergreen youth. God planted a dream in Abraham when he was 75 years old. When he was 100 years old, God visited him again and restored his broken dream. God visited Moses when he was 80 years old and planted him a dream to deliver the Israelites out of the hands of King Pharaoh in Egypt. Moses was called by God at the age of 80 and was used until he was at the age of 120.
Sometimes we feel like our dreams are broken. Do not be discouraged. Many people live their lives while experiencing their dreams being broken. However, our broken dreams are restored when we meet God. When we face difficult environments, we feel like our wings are broken. But God heals our broken wings by making us dream again. He strengthens our weakened wings. He pours unto us the power to be able to soar beyond the difficult circumstances.
God made us soar. A dream is like a soaring wing. You will have a vision when you are soaring up to a high place. If you go up to a high place, you will see far. The higher you go, the farther you can see. You can see the whole picture. Dreams have the power to soar. Do not look at the ground alone. Lift your eyes and look up to the things above. Look at the sky. Look up to the high place.
Dreams are future-oriented. Dreams make us look ahead. Dreams allow us to have hope. We humans are hopeful. God is the God of hope, and He gives hope. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Ro 15:13) As long as you have hope, you can overcome all difficulties. You can overcome any obstacle.
The most important thing for a dreamer is to have a desperate heart. It is very important to have a desperate heart to accomplish dreams – an urgent heart that is determined to accomplish dreams. God works through desperate prayers, mournful prayers, and prayers with the risk of life. Hannah’s prayer was a desperate prayer. Esther’s prayer was a prayer with the risk of her life. It is crisis that makes us desperate. It is pain. But the crisis and the pain lead us to a more amazing world.
One of the painters who inspire me is Anna Mary Robertson Moses. She is better known as Grandma Moses. She started to paint at the age of 76, and opened her exhibition at the age of 80 and became a world-famous painter at the age of 100. She never learned art systematically. She was just an ordinary woman who raised children on a country farm. When she was 76 years old, she could no longer fit the thread into the hole of her embroidery needle due to rheumatoid arthritis. In result, she put down her needle and instead picked up her brush and began to draw. Listen to what she said.
“People used to tell me that it was too late. But I think this is the time to be most thankful. Since for those who truly dream of something, this very moment is their youngest moment. It’s just the perfect time to start.” (Anna Mary Robertson Moses)
Remember that there is no age too late in your life. Grandma Moses painted pictures from the age of 76 to the age of 101 – until she passed away. She left over 1,600 pieces. Dream a new dream as we are welcoming the New Year. Start doing what you wanted to do slowly. Desperation doesn’t mean restlessness. Desperate means earnest and a passionate zeal. Challenge yourself to achieve your dreams with a passionate zeal. God smiles toward the dreamer.
