십자가는 불행의 십자가입니다. 그런 까닭에 예수님도 십자가를 지시는 것을 인해 고뇌하셨습니다(막 14:34). 십자가는 저주의 상징입니다. “기록된 바 나무에 달린 자마다 저주 아래에 있는 자라 하였음이라”(갈 3:13하). 십자가는 멸시와 천대의 장소였습니다. 예수님은 바로 그 십자가에 매달려 죽임을 당하셨습니다. 십자가의 죽으심은 불행이었습니다. 하지만 예수님은 십자가의 불행 속에 담긴 부활의 영광을 보셨습니다. 결국 중요한 것은 시선입니다. 통찰입니다.
우리가 무엇인가를 보는 것보다 더 중요한 것은, 보고 있는 것에서 무엇을 발견해 내느냐에 있습니다. 불행이라는 사건 속에서 보석을 찾아내느냐가 중요합니다. 불행을 잘 극복한 사람들은 불행을 보는 눈이 다릅니다. 불행을 잘 극복한 사람들은 불행 속에 담긴 보석을 볼 줄 알았습니다. 짧은 시 한 편 소개 하고 싶습니다. 신달자 시인의 《불행》이라는 시입니다.

던지지 마라
박살난다
그것도 잘 주무르면
옥이 되리니
우리는 불행이 찾아오면 던져 버리고 싶습니다. 박살내고 싶습니다. 하지만 시인은 불행을 함부로 “던지지 마라”고 부탁합니다. “박살내지 마라”고 권면합니다. 불행도 잘 주무르면 옥(玉)이 된다고 가르쳐 줍니다. 불행도 잘 주무르면 옥이 된다는 표현은 불행을 경험한 사람이 쓸 수 있는 시어(詩語)입니다. 불행 속에서 담긴 옥을 볼 줄 아는 사람이 쓸 수 있는 시입니다. 불행을 잘 주물러서 옥을 만들어본 경험이 있는 사람이 쓸 수 있는 시입니다.
예수님은 십자가의 불행을 마다하지 않으셨습니다. 내어 던지지 않으셨습니다. 십자가라는 불행을 박살내지 않으셨습니다. 아름다운 삶은 불행이 없는 삶이 아닙니다. 불행을 이겨낸 삶입니다. 불행을 극복한 삶입니다. 불행을 행복으로 만들어 낸 삶입니다. 세상은 불행을 맛보지 않은 사람을 부러워할지 모릅니다. 불행이 없다는 것은 삶의 굴곡이 없었다는 것입니다. 삶의 골짜기가 깊지 않았다는 것입니다. 불행이 없다는 것은 위기와 시련과 역경이 없었다는 것입니다. 불행이 없다는 것은 고난이 없었다는 것입니다.
저도 불행을 좋아하는 사람은 아닙니다. 불행을 찬양하는 사람도 아닙니다. 저도 불행이 싫습니다. 하지만 인생은 역설적입니다. 불행 속에 행복이 담겨 있습니다. 인생의 깊은 맛은 불행을 통해 경험하게 됩니다. 깊은 언어, 아름다운 음악, 불후의 명화(名畫), 울림을 주는 시(詩)는 불행을 통해 탄생됩니다. 불행을 경험한 사람은 행복의 소중함을 압니다. 작은 행복도 귀히 여깁니다. 예수님의 부활이 영광스러운 것은 불행을 이겨낸 까닭입니다. 십자가의 불행을 아름다운 옥(玉)으로 만들어내신 까닭입니다. 불행의 십자가를 사랑스런 십자가로 만들어내신 까닭입니다.
예수님의 십자가는 불행의 십자가였습니다. 하지만 예수님의 십자가 속에는 놀라운 보석들로 가득 차 있었습니다. 예수님의 십자가 속에는 부활, 천국, 영생, 사랑, 축복, 화목, 평화, 소망, 그리고 성스러운 행복과 같은 보석이 담겨 있었습니다. 만일 예수님이 십자가를 지시지 않으셨다면 우리는 십자가 속에 담아 두신 놀라운 축복을 누릴 수가 없었을 것입니다.
십자가 나무는 죽임을 당하는 나무였습니다. 그 나무가 예수님의 부활을 통해 생명나무가 되었습니다. 우리는 십자가에 못 박히신 예수님을 통해 영원한 생명을 얻습니다. 십자가 나무는 저주를 받는 나무였습니다. 그 나무가 예수님의 부활을 통해 축복을 받는 나무가 되었습니다. 십자가 나무는 독을 발하는 나무였습니다. 그 나무가 예수님의 부활을 통해 향을 발하는 나무가 되었습니다. 십자가 나무는 소중한 것을 빼앗아 가는 나무였습니다. 그 나무가 예수님의 부활을 통해 가장 좋은 것을 더해 주는 나무가 되었습니다. 십자가 나무는 원수되게 만드는 나무였습니다. 그 나무가 예수님의 부활을 통해 화평케 하는 나무가 되었습니다.
우리는 십자가를 사랑합니다. 그 이유는 예수님이 우리를 사랑해서 십자가에서 죽으신 까닭입니다. 우리는 부활을 기뻐합니다. 그 이유는 예수님이 죽음을 죽이시고 다시 살아나신 까닭입니다. 십자가에서 죽으시고 부활하신 주님께 모든 영광을 올려 드립니다.

The Glory of The Resurrection Within The Misery of the Cross
The cross is the cross of misery. For this reason, even Jesus was in agony in carrying the cross (Mark 14:34). The cross is a symbol of the curse. “For it is written: ‘Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree’” (Galatians 3:13b). The cross was a place of contempt and humility. Jesus was hung on that cross and killed. The death of the cross was misery. However, Jesus saw the glory of the resurrection in the misery of the cross. After all, what matters is what we look upon. It is insight.
What matters more than what we look upon is what we discover from it. It is important to find jewels in the events of misery. Those who have overcome misery have different eyes to look upon misery. Those who overcome misery well, know how to see the jewels in misery. I would like to introduce a short poem. It is a poem called "Misery" by Poet Shin, Dal-ja.

It will be shattered
If you rub well
It will become a jade
When misery comes, we want to throw it away. We want to smash it. However, the poet advices, "Don't throw it” recklessly. "Don't smash it," he recommends. She teaches us that misery can become a jade if we rub it well. The poetic expression, “Misery can become a jade if we rub it well” can be written by only someone who experienced misery. It is a poem that is written by someone who has made misery into a jade by rubbing it well.
Jesus did not refuse the misery of the cross. He didn't throw it out. He did not smash the misery of the cross. A beautiful life is not a life without misery. It is a life that conquers misery. It is a life that overcomes misery. It is a life that turns misery into happiness. The world may envy someone who has never tasted misery. The absence of misery means that the person did not have up and downs. It means that their valley of life is not deep. The absence of misery means that there were no crises, trails, or adversities. The absence of misery is that of no suffering.
I am not a person who likes misery. I am not a person who praises misery. I hate misery as well. But life is paradoxical. There is happiness contained in misery. The deep taste of life is experienced through misery. Deep language, beautiful music, immortal masterpieces, and echoing poems are born through misery. Those who have experienced misery knows the value of happiness. They will value even the littlest happiness. The resurrection of Jesus is glorious because he has overcome misery and because he made the misery of the cross into a beautiful jade. This is why the cross of misery has been made into a lovely cross.
Jesus' cross was the cross of misery. But Jesus' cross was filled with amazing jewels. In the cross of Jesus were jewels of resurrection, heaven, eternal life, love, blessing, reconciliation, peace, hope, and sacred happiness. If Jesus had not carried the cross, we would not have been able to enjoy the wonderful blessings that he put within the cross.
The tree of the cross was the tree on which people were executed. That tree became the tree of life through the resurrection of Jesus. We have eternal life through Jesus who was crucified on the cross. The tree of the cross was the cursed tree. But it became a blessed tree through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The tree of the cross was a poisonous tree. But through Jesus’ resurrection the tree became a fragrant tree. The tree of the cross was a tree that took away precious things. But through Jesus’ resurrection that tree became the tree that offered the best. The tree of the cross was the tree that made enemies. But the same tree became a peace-making tree through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
We love the cross. This is because Jesus loved us and died on the cross. We are delighted in the resurrection. The reason is because Jesus conquered death and rose again. We give all the glory to our Lord who died on the cross and rose again.
