알바니아 전체 국토의 70%가 산지입니다. 이 천 미터가 넘는 높은 산들이 많이 있습니다. 북쪽에 병풍처럼 펼처진 산봉우리들을 볼 때마다 갈렙이 여호수아에게 했던 말을 생각해 봅니다.
“이 산지를 내게 주소서!”
갈렙이 얻기를 원했던 산악 지방에는 키가 크고 강한 아낙 사람들이 살고 있었고 그들의 성읍 또한 크고 견고했습니다. 하나님이 갈렙에게 주셨던 사명은 그들을 쫓아 내는 것이었습니다. 그와 반대로 우리에게 주신 사명은 알바니아 현지인들을 섬기고 그들에게 생명을 주는 주님의 복음을 전하는 것입니다. 알바니아에서 공산주의가 무너지고 시작된 복음 사역이 30 년이 되어갑니다. 오늘도 산지의 견고한 성읍들과도 같은 알바니아 땅을 바라보며 기도합니다. “이 산지를 내게 주소서!”
지난 9 월에 북동쪽에 위치한 디브라(Dibra)에 두 번 다녀 왔습니다. 어려운 경제로 인해 많은 인구 이동과 사회 문제를 겪고 있는 지역입니다. 총 인구는 약 6 만명이며 두 지역에 교회가 세워져 있습니다. 알바니아에서 인구 대비 교회 수가 가장 적은 지역이며 복음 사역이 가장 필요한 곳입니다. 수년 전 리서치를 통해 이 지역의 사정을 알게 된 후 계속해서 기도하고 있습니다. 함께 기도 부탁 드립니다. “이 산지를 우리에게 주소서!”
타문화 선교의 가장 중요한 부분은 전도입니다. 여러 가지 사역으로 바빠지다 보면 전도에 소홀 해지기 쉽습니다. 현지인들과 많은 접촉을 통해 어떻게든 그리스도의 복음이 전해지도록 노력하고 있습니다. 이번에 돌아와 복음을 전하는데 한 단계 진전이 있었습니다. 전통 종교라는 견고한 요새 속에 숨은 이들이 저희가 설명하는 예수 그리스도가 누구인지 알아 듣기 시작했습니다. 많은 성도들이 기도해 주신 것에 감사드립니다. 저희가 만나고 전하는 중에 할 말을 가르쳐 주시는 성령님을 찬양합니다. 계속해서 기도해 주세요. “한 영혼을 우리에게 주소서!”

The land of Albania consists of 70% mountains with more than 20 peaks over 6000 feet. The panorama of tall mountains often reminds us of what Caleb once told Joshua during the occupation war in Canaan.
“Give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day! (Joshua 14:12)”
The hill country which Caleb desired was occupied by the tall and strong Anakites. They were protected by well-built fortresses. The mission given to Caleb was to drive the locals out. On the contrary, our mission is to serve and save the Albanians by sharing the life-giving message of Jesus Christ. It has been almost 30 years since the Communism failed and the Gospel flooded in, but we still see the strongholds which reject the saving knowledge of Christ. As we recognize spiritual reality of this land, we pray, “LORD, give us this hill country!”
In September, we twice visited Dibra province located in the northeast of Tirana, the capital city. There has been a high level of migration due to a bad economy. Its cities suffer from multiple social issues. Now, among about 60,000 population, there are only two churches. It is the least evangelized area with the least number of active churches. Since we learned of Dibra through a research years ago, we have been consistently praying for this part of Albania. “LORD, give us this hill country!”
The most important part of a cross-cultural ministry is Gospel-sharing. It is easy to neglect it as we get busy with various ministry responsibilities. Acknowledging the danger, we strive to make multiple contacts with the locals. Thankfully, we have noticed an advancement in the sharing process and the message seems to penetrate their religious and cultural shields (which rejects the message.) Thank you for praying for Albania. Please continue praying for the break-through of the Gospel message.
